Caves are among the most fascinating natural spectacles there are. The experience of wandering inside the earth and discovering its branching systems is unique. The Hölloch is the largest cave in Switzerland and Europe. Its size even makes it a world record holder: no cave in the world is simultaneously so long and so deep. The Hölloch has a total length of 210 km and a difference in altitude of 1033 meters.
The cave offers a wide range of guided tours. You can choose between different expedition lengths and the destination of the tour. There is everything from 2-hour short tours to full-day tours. On one tour, visitors can even enjoy dinner in the cave.
You will be accompanied on all tours by experienced expedition guides. They will give you a lot of exciting information about the formation of the cave and the different stone formations. These include dripstones, which have formed over millions of years from calcareous water. Or exciting steep walls and fascinating cave rooms. All these structures were formed by the underground water flows in the cave.
You can find the visitor center for Hölloch in Stalden, which is part of Muotathal. Just a short walk from the center is the entrance to the stunning cave. The area is easily accessible by public transport or car.
The cave is just a three-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, Hölloch. To get there easily, take the train from your starting point to Schwyz train station. From there, catch bus 501 towards Muotathal Hölloch and ride it to the final stop. The bus departs every 30 minutes from Schwyz train station.
The cave is also very easy to reach by car. Just drive to the address "Stalden 15, 6436 Muotathal". You can park your car at the Restaurant Hölloch in Muotathal/Stalden. From there it is only a short walk to the visitor center. Also bigger coaches can drive on the road to the restaurant Hölloch without any problems.
Thanks to the many offers for various expeditions into the cave, a visit is doable for anyone with a normal fitness level. Claustrophobia shouldn’t be a big issue either, as the paths in the Hölloch are generally quite spacious. Visitors who can easily use a regular four-person lift should not experience any claustrophobia in the cave.
With a constant temperature of 6°C throughout the year, and with the weather outside being irrelevant, visiting the Hölloch is one of the perfect bad weather ideas in Switzerland.
However, the cave is not accessible with strollers, wheelchairs, or dogs. A trip to the Hölloch is, however, an excellent choice for a school or family outing. It’s also a fantastic activity for smaller, private team events.
