The Zurich region includes the cantons of Zug and Zurich. Zurich is a beautiful city and a center for education, finance, and culture. How well do you and your kids know the city? Take advantage of the autumn holidays to go on a sightseeing tour. A boat ride on Lake Zurich can be a great way to unwind afterward. The Uetliberg, Zurich's local mountain, is also a wonderful destination for a day trip in autumn. You can reach it quickly by taking the S10 and enjoy the view from the lookout tower. A walk along the Planet Trail from Uetliberg to Felsenegg is particularly lovely in autumn when the leaves are colorful. If the weather doesn’t cooperate for outdoor activities, consider visiting the Chocolate Museum or the Zurich Zoo.
There are many options for a city tour. You can explore by TukTuk, city bus, or on foot. A nice way to give tired legs a break is to ride a Segway or E-Scooter with a city guide accompanying you. For a day trip, it’s worth combining a visit to Zurich with a tour of the chocolate factory and a bus ride to Schaffhausen. This way, the whole family will have a good time.
Taking the whole family on a boat tour of Lake Zurich is not just exciting for the kids; it can also be very relaxing. During the autumn holidays, there are still plenty of sunny days that are perfect for this. The popular scenic boat trips start every half hour at Zurich's Bürkliplatz. They vary in length and don't always stop at all boat landing points.
The Bern region is particularly diverse. Here you can find the Jungfrau region along with four other mountains over four thousand meters high. The Brienz and Thun lakes invite you to enjoy boat trips, and in the middle of it all lies Interlaken, a perfect starting point for activities of all kinds. A day trip from Bern to Europa-Park in Rust (Germany) is also a welcome change for both young and old, and you can take a guided boat trip on the Aare river between Thun and Bern.
The Glacier Gorge in Grindelwald is an exciting destination for autumn holidays in Switzerland, even for kids. You'll hike through a gorge shaped by the glacier and experience thrilling depths on the suspended spider web. The wild romance is heightened by waterfalls from the Lütschine. If your kids still have energy to spare, you can combine your visit with a trip to Grindelwald's local mountain, Pfingstegg, or Grindelwald First.
A family trip to the Schilthorn is filled with fun and experiences related to the James Bond film “On Her Majesty's Secret Service.” You and your kids will relive the thrilling movie and learn a lot about the technology used in it.
The main James Bond attractions are:
If this visit hasn’t given you enough adrenaline yet, you should definitely check out the Thrill Walk around the mountain before heading back down.
The Lucerne/Lake Lucerne region offers a host of options for your autumn holidays. Besides the stunning lakes set against beautiful mountain landscapes, you’ll discover charming villages and even baroque castles. Whether it’s Rigi, Stanserhorn, or Pilatus, the surrounding mountains are filled with countless hiking and biking trails for your whole family. Or do you prefer to take a leisurely boat trip all day across Lake Lucerne? That’s also a great idea that you can easily pursue.
Rainy days during the autumn holidays are perfect for spending a few hours or an entire day at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. Alongside the museum with its interactive exhibits, the planetarium and the XXL 3D cinema are also very exciting. As a treat, you can enjoy delicious Lindt chocolate at the Chocolate Museum.
The Stanserhorn is also known as the "Lazy Person’s Mountain", and indeed, you can lounge beautifully at an altitude of 1,898 meters. It’s considered a power spot and offers an unparalleled view of ten lakes and their surroundings, as well as a marmot colony. At Stanserhorn, you can watch delta pilots and paragliders. From Stans, you’ll need about half an hour for the nostalgic funicular and the subsequent modern cable car.
The Aargau region is known for the confluence of the three rivers Aare, Reuss, and Limmat. Just north of Brugg and Gebenstorf, you’ll find "the water castle of Switzerland," a well-known floodplain area. You can enjoy thermal baths in Rheinfelden, Bad Schinznach, and Bad Zurzach, fed by 45-degree hot sulfuric water. On rainy days or during chilly winds, a thermal bath is a lovely change of pace. If your family isn’t keen on thermal baths, you have plenty of alternatives, with over 70 museums, numerous historical castles, and 13 charming old towns to choose from.
The paddling is still a fantastic experience during the autumn holidays. You can easily navigate the Aare between Aarau and Brugg or Brugg and Full-Reuenthal. However, you’ll need good stamina; the whole family might have to paddle together to move forward on the gently flowing Aare. The sections are 18 and 19 kilometers long. In the second section, Reuss and Limmat flow into the Aare, which finally merges with the Rhine in Full-Reuenthal.
Rheinfelden is a divided town, partly in Germany and partly in Switzerland. A guided tour on the Swiss side is especially interesting. The guide wears a goat costume and shares the tale of the tailor from the Middle Ages during the hour-and-a-half tour. You’ll also visit a goat enclosure. This story becomes entertaining even for small children. For older kids, Rheinfelden offers many other exciting topics on the tour. The executioner from the Middle Ages, women’s stories, old town houses in Rheinfelden and their histories, and Rheinfelden during the plague are additional examples.
The city of Basel is beautifully situated on the Rhine River. With over 40 museums, you'll definitely find a theme that captivates you and your family on those gloomy days. Make sure to take advantage of a lovely autumn day during your break to visit Augusta Raurica. A trip to the zoo, affectionately called "Zolli" by the locals, will also be a hit with your family. For getting around the city, you can choose e-scooters or explore Basel on a Segway. Have you ever tried an escape room? Freeing a cake and indulging afterward will surely delight you and your family.
Founded by the Romans in 44 BC, this city is just ten kilometers east of Basel. At one time, it was home to up to 20,000 people. Here, you can learn how the Romans made oils and ointments or baked their bread. You can also join a pottery workshop. The impressive amphitheater, which could hold 10,000 people, is occasionally used for events today.
The Basel Zoo is located in the city center. The monkey house is a special attraction here, featuring gorillas, orangutans, and chimpanzees in the outdoor area. There’s also a children’s play area where little ones can mimic the monkeys on ropes and hammocks. Kids are particularly fascinated by the youngest zoo inhabitants—baby animals among crocodiles, cheetahs, giraffes, meerkats, and kangaroos are especially popular. Feeding occurs daily between 3 PM and 4 PM, with pelican feedings at 3:30 PM and sea lion feedings at 4 PM being especially favored.
Ticino is the sunny side of Switzerland and often offers pleasant temperatures even in October and early November. The northern part of Ticino, with its wide valleys of Leventina, Blenio, and Riviera, is great for hiking day trips. You can also experience pure nature in the Vallemaggia, the largest valley in Ticino, covering about one-fifth of the total area. This valley is considered a natural paradise, home to approximately a quarter of all Swiss animal species. In addition, some valleys are well-suited for canyoning, thanks to their carved-out gorges.
The village of Gandria still showcases the way of life from bygone times. Nothing has changed in the narrow streets of the village for over a hundred years. Gandria is located on a steep slope of Monte Brè at an elevation of 295 m above sea level, on the northern shore of Lake Lugano. You can reach it from the Lugano train station after a five-kilometer journey eastward. You can walk there in an hour via the Olive Tree Path. A pleasant alternative is taking a boat trip from Lugano, and on Friday afternoons, the Lugano tourist office offers a free guided tour of Gandria after a boat trip. However, you would need to book in advance with your family. For the return trip, locals usually take the Olive Path to the bus stop in Castagnola. Line 2 will take you back to Lugano.
The valleys and gorges in Ticino are particularly well-suited for canyoning. Beginner courses are available for kids starting at six years old, with family courses open from eight years onwards. Some providers offer courses starting from the age of 12. At the end of the tour, you'll have a chance to treat yourselves to a meal in one of the many cozy grottos.

The area boasts 365 mountain peaks, all over 2500 m above sea level, with the highest being Piz Bernina at 4049 m.ü.M., surrounded by around 35 other three-thousanders. The Rhine Gorge, known as the "Swiss Grand Canyon", is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a popular spot for rafting. The locals, who speak Romansh, call it "Ruinaulta".
If you prefer a mountain biking tour with your kids along the Vorder- or Hinterrhein during the autumn holidays, you should choose gravel e-bikes. They perform particularly well on gravel paths. A very unusual excursion for you and your family is a trip to Arosa Bear Land. Another idea is to visit a freestyle camp for children in the Engadine, where kids aged 10 to 16 learn new skills and how to pose for video recordings.
Children aged 10 and up can participate in a several-hour-long rafting tour on the Vorderrhein, provided they are accompanied by an adult. This unique experience leaves a lasting impression on children who enjoy outdoor activities. You'll cover a distance of about twenty kilometers, which includes both calm stretches and rapids. You can combine this rafting trip with a barbecue on the beach.
You can reach Arosa Bear Land by cable car until around the end of October. The Bear Land is situated on a plateau at 2000 m above sea level and includes:
The adventure trail is suspended and allows you to observe the bears at eye level from eight viewing platforms. It measures a total of 80 meters in length. The experience trail is 2.5 kilometers long, where you can encounter six large bears that you can measure. If your kids present the completed punch card at the end, they will receive a bear-themed surprise.
The Eastern Switzerland region with Liechtenstein offers many hiking opportunities in the Alpine region and Appenzellerland, also suitable for kids. The mountain restaurant Äscher, reachable by the Ebenalp cable car, is built into the rocks and is a popular excursion destination. The three lakes, Sämtisersee, Fählersee, and Seealpsee, are referred to as the pearls of the Alpstein.
Children's adventure playgrounds are very popular here. In Kronberg, there's a zipline park that features a ropes course and 25 ziplines totaling 1,210 meters in length. A walk with a llama or alpaca is also something quite unusual and will definitely be unforgettable.
The Hölloch is a massive karst cave system in Muotatal, over 200 kilometers long and with a height difference of more than 1,000 meters. Guided tours are available that are suitable for kids starting from 6, 9, or 10 years old, depending on the extent and difficulty. You don't need to bring any special equipment. Whether it's a short tour (from 6 years) or a day trip with a sparkling tour (from 10 years), the experience is always special for you and your family. The day trip includes a hike to the “Dombiwak”. Later on, you'll encounter a 30-meter high waterfall. It’s underground and called the “Wasserdom”.
You can embark on a two-hour introductory tour with llamas and alpacas or combine an evening trekking experience with some delightful raclette or fondue in the fresh air, illuminated by torches. This is a wonderful experience for kids during the autumn holidays. You’ll stroll with the animals and your family along pleasant paths, through meadows, and into the woods.
In the Jura & Three Lakes Region, you can enjoy hiking with the whole family, go on a bike tour, or visit the Neuchâtel mountains. A must-see is the impressive rock formation Creux du Van. This beautiful rock basin features 160-meter high walls and is almost horseshoe-shaped. You can reach it by car, on foot, or by bike, but only after navigating 14 hairpin bends.
The Chasseral Nature Park, located north of Lake Neuchâtel and west of Lake Biel, is also worth a visit. Three public buses head to Chasseral. The Jura area mostly sits at an elevation of 1,000 meters. Do your kids enjoy horseback riding? This region is perfect for outings on horseback, and you'll find about thirteen riding schools or stables to help you choose the right one.
The guided tours of the charming town of Murten, with its medieval castle and walkable city wall, are diverse and have something for everyone's taste.
The Chasseral Nature Park is located within the triangle formed by La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchâtel, and Biel, reaching its highest point at around 1,600 m above sea level. Alongside cliffs and pastures, you'll find beautiful peat bogs to explore with your family. Since this area remains largely untouched by tourism, you have a unique opportunity to enjoy the original rural cuisine.
The Vegetable Trail is nearly 35 kilometers long. It mostly runs on car-free paths and is easy to ride on a bike. You’ll pass through picturesque agricultural landscapes and several farms.
Here are the villages you will go through as stages:
At the start and end point in Kerzers, there are parking spaces for cars, and you will also find restrooms here.
Geneva is marked by a 140-meter-high fountain on Lake Geneva, known as the "Jet d’eau," which has become the city's landmark. The smallest of Switzerland's 13 tourist regions, it boasts nearly thirty fascinating museums. The old town of Geneva presents a pleasant contrast to the district where the banks and numerous international organizations are located.
The best way to explore Geneva's old town and its main attractions is on an E-Bike. After that, the ride could take you to the English Garden with its colorful flower clock, to the United Nations Square, and to the Broken Chair sculpture. Plan on spending about 2-3 hours for this adventure.
The Natural History Museum is located in the Eaux-Vives district. You’ll find exhibitions from all over the world across four floors, with a total exhibition space of 10,000 square meters. It features massive insect collections and even dinosaurs. The museum creates a realistic atmosphere with animal roars and ambient sounds. More than 3,500 animals are on display.
The Wallis region is characterized by 45 peaks over 4,000 meters. The striking Matterhorn is one of them. The area around Zermatt is well-connected with cable cars, some of which can also transport bikes. You can easily get around the Zermatt area without breaking a sweat.
A mountain hike with a constant view of the Matterhorn is a great change of pace during the autumn holidays. You might want to tackle the famous 5-Lakes Trail. For the hike into the Lost Valley, you will need a mountain guide.
Do you have to work while your kids are on their school holidays? No worries, in Wallis, kids' camps are also offered in the autumn. They allow children of similar ages (6-8, 9-11, and 12 and up) to experience shared activities and adventures.
You'll find more than 150 mountain lakes in the Zermatt area above 2,000 meters above sea level, and they are all unique. In addition to the clear lakes you usually expect in the mountains, there are also milky-looking waters. The cloudiness comes from glacial runoff. Between Blauherd and Sunnegga, you can visit five of the beautiful lakes in sequence by following the marked trail numbered 11. It's great for families with kids.
The Gornergrat is one of those special places in the world. The view from here is spectacular and perfect for the most beautiful photos. Gornergrat sits at 3,089 meters above sea level and is reached by cogwheel train, climbing 1,500 meters in just half an hour. In addition to a particularly beautiful view of the Matterhorn, you'll be overwhelmed by the sight of 29 nearby 4,000-meter peaks and the powerful Gorner Glacier.
Along with Lake Geneva, this region includes the Vaud Alps and a hilly Jura landscape. It's famous for its vineyards. The Lavaux wine region is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is especially beautiful when viewed from a boat on Lake Geneva.
The museum takes you through the beginnings of the Olympics in ancient Greece and their evolution up to today. Thanks to modern computer technology and interactive designs, the museum feels fresh and engaging. It's very contemporary and particularly appealing for school kids. On weekends, the TOM Café at the museum offers a brunch, providing a lovely view of the mountains and Lake Geneva.
You can take a boat across Lake Geneva, for example, from Lausanne to Evian or Chillon. In Evian, you have the chance to explore the town or nearby attractions before heading back. For instance, you can ride the historic funicular to the Evian springs before taking the boat back to Lausanne.
On the way to Chillon, you'll enjoy stunning views of the terraced vineyards of the Lavaux UNESCO World Heritage site. From Geneva, you can take a one-hour round trip, which you can perfectly combine with activities in the city. Boats from Montreux cruise for two hours across the lake, passing by the nature reserve Les Grangettes and Chillon Castle. The water castle Chillon is also a very popular destination for families; it dates back to the Middle Ages.
The Fribourg region offers beautiful cycling trails around Lake Schwarzsee. It's also a great area for hiking. You can hike wonderfully in the valley around Charmey (also known as Galmis) all the way to Bulle. Along the way, you'll find cheese dairies and baths nestled between the mountains. Similar hiking regions can be found around Moléson and Les Paccots. Don't miss the medieval towns of Estavayer-le-Lac and Fribourg, which are definitely worth a visit.
This museum is quite unusual and captivates even young art enthusiasts. It showcases the works of a married couple. The location itself is unique: the highlights are housed in a former tram depot. Fribourg artist Jean Tinguely created artworks that constantly clatter and rattle. They feature intricate mechanics that will leave you and all visitors in awe. In contrast, his wife's art pieces are different. She created round and harmonious figures that are very pleasing to the eye.
The circular route is about 37 kilometers long. It starts at Lake Schwarzsee and takes you over the Euschel Pass southward to Jaun. From here, you'll head west to Charmey and then back north toward Lake Schwarzsee. The ride can be quite challenging at times, so it's definitely worth renting e-bikes. Several restaurants are tempting you around the northern Schwarzsee.
