Olympia Bob Run

The Olympia Bob Run is located at 1,800 m above sea level and is not only the oldest bobsled track but also the world’s only natural ice track. The track is rebuilt by hand every year and has already served as the venue for 22 World Championships and two Olympic Winter Games. On the 1,722 m long track, not only sports stars can take to the track; visitors also have the opportunity to ride in a bob themselves while in St. Moritz. A must for all adrenaline junkies.

Segantini Museum

The Segantini Museum lies on a gentle rise at the entrance of St. Moritz. The splendid dome-shaped building appears almost majestic and is impossible to miss. The museum opened in 1908 and is regarded as a walk-through monument for the artist.

Segantini is known as a pioneer of Alpine painting. He spent the last years of his life in the Alpine landscape, which greatly influenced his art. His works feature inspiring light conditions and spectacular mountain scenes. Inside the museum, you can admire the largest collection of the artist’s work, which includes, among others, “Noon in the Alps” and “Ave Maria during the Crossing.”

Other Sights

St. Moritz is a town with about 5,000 inhabitants. Nevertheless, besides luxurious hotels and restaurants serving guests from all over the world, it has various sights to offer. They are part of the national cultural heritage:

  • The Leaning Tower of St. Moritz was part of a church dedicated to Saint Mauritius from the 15th century. At the end of the 18th century, the tower began to lean due to a landslide. The church was demolished at that time.
  • The Reformed French Church in Plazza Paracelsus, built in 1877, is protected as a historical monument.
  • The Engadine Museum is a museum of folk art in the Engadine.
  • The Forum Paracelsus features a Bronze Age spring source where you can drink water from the Mauritius spring.
  • The Chesa Planta Museum is a protected residential house. The largest patrician house in the Engadine houses a museum dedicated to domestic culture.
  • The Church of St. Mauritius serves as a successor to the church that was demolished due to a landslide. It was built in 1867 and has had a rock chapel located beneath the parish church since 1973.
  • Four grand hotels and the Café Hanselmann in St. Moritz date back to around 1900 to 1913 and are therefore considered national cultural assets.

St. Moritz itself and its surroundings offer many beautiful places to relax or explore. Whether on foot, by bike, on skis, or even on horseback, the Upper Engadine will make every heart soar.

Stazer Lake

Stazer Lake is a high moor lake located in the Stazer Forest. Access by car is not allowed, but you can reach the lake on foot after a lovely walk of about 45 minutes from St. Moritz.

The lake is situated at an altitude of 1,809 m on the northern side of the Rosatsch group and is approximately 200 m wide and 300 m long. It is considered an absolute highlight for swimming in the Upper Engadine. The larger lakes in the area often only receive moderate temperatures even in summer. However, thanks to its size and shallow depth, Stazer Lake offers very pleasant temperatures. On the east shore of the lake, you'll find a swimming area, a restaurant, sunbathing lawns, changing rooms, and a barbecue spot.

Piz Nair - The Local Mountain of St. Moritz

The most famous ibex in Switzerland stands on top of Piz Nair at an altitude of 3,011 m. The sculpture overlooks the Upper Engadine directly. It's a special highlight that you shouldn't miss during your visit to St. Moritz.

You can reach the summit via funicular and aerial cable cars directly from the village center of St. Moritz. Once at the top, you'll be greeted with a breathtaking view of the mountain and lake scenery of the Upper Engadine and St. Moritz. You can enjoy the view while snacking, sipping coffee, having cake, or lunch at the panoramic restaurant. For the descent, you can either take the funicular and aerial cable car again or walk back down with good footwear.

Morteratsch Glacier Trail

The Morteratsch Glacier Trail runs along the third longest glacier in the Eastern Alps. On the way, you can marvel at and even walk on eternal ice up close. Along the path, there are 16 information points that tell about the glacier's life and retreat. The trail is just under 3 km long and leads to the glacier lake. It's an informative and exciting excursion that's great for the whole family.

Visit to the National Park Zernez

The Zernez National Park is the largest nature reserve in Switzerland. In autumn the national park shines especially beautiful in bright colors. If you keep your eyes open, with a little luck you will see marmots, ibexes, chamois and many other animals.

Relaxed journey

Vacations should already start with the arrival. To make it as enjoyable as possible, you can take the Rhaetian Railway from Chur to St. Moritz. Here you pass a part of the Unesco World Heritage Albula line and can enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountain world

It pays to get up early

In St. Moritz, quite a few buses arrive daily with day visitors from Austria, Germany and Italy. So the village is often very busy between late morning and afternoon. If you want to avoid this, better use the early morning hours for a more undisturbed walk through the town.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is a beloved traditional sport in the Upper Engadin. In St. Moritz, you can skate year-round on the artificial ice rink at the Eisarena Ludains. Another very popular hike is the ascent to Piz Mezdi at 2992 m above sea level, where you can enjoy a view of the Bernina mountain range.

Events in St. Moritz

St. Moritz is a place where events are always happening. International winter sports competitions are held here at irregular intervals. The sophisticated place attracts celebrities and rich people from all over the world.

Among the most famous events are in the calendar:

  • At the end of January, the three-day Snow Polo World Cup has taken place on the frozen Lake St. Moritz every year since 1985
  • January and February: Amusements on the Lake Celebrities from all over the world do not miss this spectacle on Lake St. Moritz. The program includes curling, winter golf and skijoring. Skijoring involves a skier being pulled by a horse on a rope.
  • February: White Turf is another regular equestrian competition on the frozen Lake St. Moritz with fast-paced gallop and trotting races
  • Mid-February :Cricket on Ice on Lake St. Moritz is a competition between 6 teams from all over the world
  • End of February: The I.C.E. is a spectacle of vintage cars, historic race cars and sleek sports cars on the lake.
  • Beginning of March: The Nomad St. Moritz is a popular hiking fair. In the first week of March, it invites you into houses that tell stories. Art and design are at the highest level here.
  • March: Ski Marathon and Half Marathon at the Maloja - S-chanf trail with 14'000 Nordic fans
  • End of March: Freeski and Snowboard World Cup Corvatsch (4 days World Cup finals)
  • Beginning of July: Festival da la chanzun rumantscha means singing and music of Rhaeto-Romanic Switzerland.
  • Beginning of July: Engadin Bike Giro is a three-day stage race by mountain bike over 150 km and 5500 meters of altitude around Silvaplana and St. Moritz.
  • Summer: La Tavolata is an event that invites about 9000 international and local guests "To Table" in the middle of the village. Strictly speaking, there are 42 tables made of Swiss stone pine, which embellish the center of the village for about 400 meters during a weekend.

Getting to St. Moritz

St. Moritz is situated at an altitude of 1856 m above sea level, amidst breathtaking mountain scenery in the Engadin. The journey itself is already a highlight, as you can fully enjoy this charming region along the way. Despite its location, St. Moritz is well connected to public transport and the road network.

By Car

You can easily reach St. Moritz by car from all directions. A mountain pass drive will take you from Zürich and Milan to St. Moritz in about three hours. Alternatively, you can put your car on the train and get to St. Moritz from Prättigau. In this case, you'll pass through the Vereina Tunnel with the car transport service between Klosters and Sagliains.

By Public Transport

A truly special journey awaits you on the Bernina Express or the Glacier Express. These trains traverse the UNESCO World Heritage route between Chur and St. Moritz along the Albulatal. You'll pass stunning mountains and travel through countless tunnels. Regular trains of the Rhaetian Railway also operate the same route from Chur. There are also trains of the Rhaetian Railway running between Scuol and St. Moritz if you're coming from the Lower Engadine.
