Splügen is situated at 1457 m.a.s.l. on the Rhine Forest near the Splügen Pass and San Bernadino Pass. The Splügen Pass already played an important role 2000 years ago and connected Graubünden with Italy even then. It leads from Splügen about 9 km south to the Italian border with the province of Sondrio. The village of Splügen has an award-winning townscape with Walser houses, which was largely rebuilt after a village fire (1716). In summer, the area offers more than 100 km of hiking trails with gigantic views, mountain lakes and old mountain villages. In winter, the Splügen-Tambo ski area is a popular destination for skiing and cross-country skiing enthusiasts. The Splügen Pass is also increasingly used for quad tours.
