Salgesch is the largest wine-growing community in the Upper Valais and is located near the French-speaking Lower Valais. More than 40 wineries produce almost 90% red wine here. Thanks to a unique microclimate and soils rich in magnesium and limestone, the wine achieves a special quality that is widely appreciated. The village, with about 1200 inhabitants, is nestled in a setting of more than 200 hectares of vineyards. The hilly area is largely located on the Rhone River. The northern slope stretches up to 2100 meters above sea level below the Varneralp. The surrounding area offers many opportunities for hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts. White water rafting is popular on the Rhone.
