The impressive Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge was opened to visitors for the first time in 1903. in 1930, the path was extended to its current length. Since then, the circular path has only been slightly modified and made safer. Today, the gorge is still a popular destination for visitors to the region. It fascinates with numerous waterfalls, exciting grottos and bizarre stone structures. The great prepared footpath leads through tunnels and over steps into the gorge.
On the circular route you will discover the power of water at first hand. Rushing waterfalls, swirling cauldrons and cold water mist let you experience the gorge. If you would like to learn more about the exciting gorge, it is worth taking part in one of the guided tours through the glacier gorge. These tours are often coupled with other activities, such as short guided hikes.
After the tour through the gorge, the path goes through the forest back down to the road. There you will find the Café Schluchthüttli. In this cozy pub, various drinks and snacks are offered for refreshment. Alternatively, you can hike further at the end of the gorge with good shoes. Various paths lead you a bit higher up and offer great views of the surrounding mountains and even glaciers. Please wear good hiking boots, as these are mountain trails.


Getting to the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge
The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge is located along a road between Meiringen and Grindelwald, making it accessible from both directions. The gorge is also situated in a hiking and biking area.
By car
The gorge can only be reached by car from Meiringen. The stretch between Grindelwald and Schwarzwaldalp is not accessible by private car. From Meiringen you simply follow the Scheideggstrasse to the Hotel Rosenlaui. A little further up is the parking lot for the Glacier Gorge. The access is allowed for minibuses up to 3.5 tons.
Public transport
To arrive by public transport, you can start from Grindelwald as well as from Meiringen. Directly next to the gorge is the post bus stop "Gletscherschlucht Rosenlaui". This stop is served by the post bus on the Rosenlaui line (Meiringen - Grosse Scheidegg - Grindelwald).
Hiking and Biking
To hike to the gorge, the Via Alpina trail, Stage 10, is a great option. This segment of the long route runs from Meiringen to Grindelwald and takes about 8 hours in total. This is quite a stretch for a trip to the Rosenlaui Gorge, so it's better to hike only parts of the stage and use the post bus for the rest of the journey.
For biking, the regional route 61, Stage 2, passes by the entrance of the gorge. Here too, you only need to cover part of the route to get to Rosenlaui. Overall, this stage goes from Interlaken to Meiringen and is suited for experienced bikers due to the steep sections.


Who is the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge suitable for?
A visit to the Rosenlaui Gorge is great for all ages. The circular path takes about 45 minutes on well-maintained and secure trails through this natural spectacle. You’ll ascend 115 meters through tunnels and up many steps. It’s highly recommended to wear good sneakers or hiking shoes for the walk. Dogs are allowed on the circular path.
The path is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. However, the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge makes for an exciting school or family trip. There is also a barbecue area (Broch) nearby, just a 15-minute walk away, which perfectly complements the family outing. It’s also a fantastic outing for smaller, private team events in this natural wonder.
