The village square of Schwyz is situated at 516 m above sea level between Lake Lucerne and Lake Lauerz. From Schwyz the steepest funicular in Switzerland runs to the car-free village of Stoos. Schwyz lies at the foot of the Mythen mountain massif on the southern slope. The Grosse Mythen and the Kleine Mythen are two rock pyramids above the valley basin.
