Lake Lucerne got its name from the four historical "Waldstätten" where it is located. These are the three original cantons Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden, along with the canton of Lucerne. Here by the lake, the founders of the Swiss Confederation took the Rütli Oath.
The lake is beautifully set in the landscape and has many idyllic towns and villages along its shores. Of course, this includes the bustling city of Lucerne, as well as popular holiday spots like Weggis and Vitznau.
The water of the lake is of drinking quality and remains crystal clear year-round. This makes it perfect for swimming in the summer. The many beaches and lidos invite relaxation and leisurely stays. At Lake Urner, part of Lake Lucerne, divers can enjoy exploring a submerged wreck.
Hikers at Lake Lucerne won't be disappointed. On one hand, you can explore various trails on the many peaks surrounding the lake. On the other hand, for example, the Camino de Santiago passes by the lake. The section you'll cover goes from Einsiedeln to Brunni.
If you want to walk around Lake Lucerne, you'll need at least 46 hours. The mountain hiking trail No. 98 is marked as the “Waldstätterweg” and is divided into seven stages: Brunnen - Vitznau - Küssnacht - Lucerne - Alpnachstad - Bürgenstock - Beckenried - Rütli
At the northern end of the lake is the Rigi, the Queen of the Mountains. From the summit of Rigi, you have a breathtaking view of Lucerne and Lake Lucerne. The area is a true hiker's paradise, offering the perfect trail for every fitness level. You'll always be surrounded by stunning Swiss mountain scenery.
Another peak by Lake Lucerne is Pilatus. There is a rich world of legends surrounding the mountain. According to these tales, the mountain is home to a dragon, the dwelling place of giants, and the burial site of a great ruler. You can reach the summit via many paths. From Alpnachstad, the world’s steepest cogwheel train takes you up to the top.
Countless cable cars take you into the mountains around the lake. The CabriO cable car ascends to over 1900 m above sea level to the Stanserhorn. What’s special about this cable car is that it’s the first in the world with an open upper deck. This way, you can enjoy the stunning view and feel the mountain wind on your face during the ride.
The Lake Lucerne area also offers a wide range of activities for kids. One of the best is a visit to the Swiss Museum of Transport. This interactive museum is the most visited in Switzerland, showcasing a large collection of locomotives, cars, ships, and airplanes. Additionally, the museum includes a planetarium and the “Swiss Chocolate Adventure”.
With paragliding, you can admire the lake from a unique perspective. There are plenty of tandem flight options that let you soar over the lake alongside the birds. Various take-off spots provide a spectacular experience for every adventurous visitor.
The nature surrounding Lake Lucerne is stunning. The lake often enjoys mild weather and climate since it is sheltered by the mountains. This allows southern plants such as cypress trees, fig trees, hemp palms, yucca palms, and chestnuts to thrive along the shores.
There is a wide range of boat trips available on Lake Lucerne for visitors. Most of these start in Lucerne. They include both sightseeing tours and routes that take you to places like Küssnacht. Additionally, the boat trips can be combined with other activities or a delicious lunch.
Lake Lucerne is also a great place to eat. Various restaurants with a view of the lake offer you great dishes and delicious drinks. While you enjoy the menus, your gaze is lost on the glittering lake.
A real insider tip is Niederbauen Chulm. This viewpoint is one of the most beautiful places on the whole lake. You will be offered a beautiful panoramic view of the lake and the shore landscape.
