Interlaken is known for a good reason as a mecca for paragliders. The natural beauty of this area in the Jungfrau region is almost unmatched. Turquoise lakes and snow-capped mountain peaks enchant visitors year-round, inviting them to take a paragliding flight. In this guide, we present five particularly beautiful flights.
Because of the unique atmosphere in the morning sun, paragliding flights from Niederhorn are especially suited for the early morning hours.
Niederhorn is the local mountain of Beatenberg, located on the northern shore of Lake Thun. You can reach the mountain via a group cable car that takes you to an elevation of about 2000 meters. Alongside a wonderful view of the Bernese Alps, Lake Brienz, and Lake Thun, Niederhorn offers many hiking trails.
The take-off point for the paragliding flight from Niederhorn is at 1950 m a.s.l. The flight takes about twenty to thirty minutes down through the forests to the center of Interlaken, covering approximately 1400 meters of altitude. For a tandem flight from Niederhorn, you'll need about 2.5 hours in total, including travel time.
Even before your paragliding flight from Beatenberg you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains. Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are just as wonderful to see from the launch site as Lake Thun and a little to the west Lake Brienz.
The launch site is located at 1350 m above sea level below the Niederhorn near Amisbühl. You walk a few steps on the slightly sloping terrain and you're already soaring. The pure flight time back to Interlaken varies between twelve and twenty minutes, depending on the thermals.
During your flight you will overcome an altitude difference of about 800 meters. For a tandem flight from Beatenberg you need a total of about 1.5 hours including the journey.
The best time for a paragliding flight from the Schynige Platte is during the evening hours before sunset. Flights from Schynige Platte are only available for part of the year, specifically from May to October. The alpine panorama during this paragliding experience is stunningly beautiful. On one side, you can gaze at the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, while on the other side, you'll see the lake landscape with Interlaken.
A nostalgic train takes you more than seven kilometers up to Schynige Platte from Wilderswil, reaching Breitlauenen. It climbs 1,420 meters in elevation and takes about 40 minutes.
The launch site is at an altitude of about 1,300 m above sea level and can be reached after a short hike from the mountain station. You'll cover 750 meters of altitude during a flight towards sunset that lasts about twenty minutes. The mountains shimmering orange in the evening light create a special experience. For a tandem flight from Schynige Platte, you'll need around 2.5 hours total, including travel time.
Grindelwald-First is a broad mountain ridge above Grindelwald. On the sunny side lies the launch site for paragliding at an altitude of 2,150 m above sea level. The panorama showcases several impressive mountain peaks, including the Grosse Scheidegg, the Wetterhorn, the Schreckhorn, up to the north face of the Eiger and the Kleine Scheidegg.
With the Firstbahn, you can reach the summit from Grindelwald in about 25 minutes. At First, there are not only the launch area but also numerous other attractions, such as the First Cliff Walk or the First Flyer. The latter is an 800 m long zipline where adrenaline junkies can soar through the air on a steel cable at speeds exceeding 80 km/h.
During your paragliding flight from Grindelwald-First, you can often spot golden eagles. The actual flight time to the landing area in Grindelwald varies depending on the thermals, lasting between twelve and twenty minutes. In total, you should plan for about 1.5 hours for the flight.
Offer from Swiss Activities:
The paragliding experience at Schiltgrat offers an incredible winter adventure. From Mürren, you take a chairlift up to Schiltgrat, where you'll find a gently sloping launch site right next to the ski slope at 2,150 m above sea level.
The paragliding flight from Schiltgrat takes you over the Lauterbrunnen Valley down to Stechelberg, where you'll land at the base station of the Schilthorn cable car after about 20 minutes of flying. Along the way, you’ll descend approximately 1,200 meters while passing by an impressive rock wall.
This paragliding flight is also available in the summer. However, the launch then takes place from Mürren at 1,630 m above sea level.
As one of Switzerland's most popular vacation resorts, Interlaken lies between two lakes and has the impressive mountain panorama of the Jungfrau region in direct view. Between the turquoise Lake Brienz and the deep blue Lake Thun, the Aare meanders through Interlaken. Whether it's a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenade, a guided e-bike tour or an adrenaline-pumping paragliding flight, Interlaken has something to offer for everyone.
