The Gotthard is a mountain massif in the heart of the Central Alps. Its core area stretches for around 20 km from the Furka Pass over the Gotthard Pass to the Oberalp Pass. As early as the Middle Ages, the Gotthard Pass became one of the most important links on the north-south axis of Alpine crossings. Today, the Gotthard Pass is a 26 km long direct transport link over a mountain ridge. At 2107 m above sea level, it connects Airolo (Valle Leventina) in the canton of Ticino with Andermatt (Urseren valley) in the canton of Uri.
