Local guide
The town of Rheinfelden offers those interested in the Middle Ages the perfect starting point for a journey back to the "dark ages". In the alleys and squares of the town, the traces of the Middle Ages are still clearly visible. You will meet your guide in the courtyard of the town hall and start the tour from there.
Visit the pillory and learn about the reasons why people were despised and condemned here. Stories of witches and other anecdotes from that time accompany your tour through the city. You will learn about the hard life in the Middle Ages and the problems people had to face. There are many legends about the interrogation room in the Knife Tower. In the tower, criminals were tortured and executed, then, according to legend, pushed into the Rhine. Your guide will tell you eerie and exciting stories about this historic place.
At the same time, you will hear funny and ironic stories about the "dark ages" in Rheinfelden. For example, the town still has an outhouse to this day. Idioms that are still used today also come from this time and the popular beer experienced a real boom in the Middle Ages.
Exciting information and impressive sites make this tour a very special experience!
Practical information:
Whoever was accused in Rheinfelden in those dark times was quickly hanged or sentenced to other gruesome punishments. The pillory, which still stands in the town today, was one of the more merciful punishments. The corner of the house, also known as the "pillory", was used to expose the condemned to the public for a longer period of time. Chained, they were then insulted, spat upon and despised. This place was chosen with care, because at that time the alley was the most frequented in the whole city
