Blue Lake Switzerland

9 Highlights at Blausee

  • Blausee lives up to its name: it's deep blue. It's fed by the groundwater stream from the Kandertal valley.
  • The 0.64-hectare lake was formed by a landslide around 15,000 years ago. The debris can still be found in the lake today.
  • Blausee is situated at an altitude of 887 m above sea level, just above Kandergrund in the Bernese Alps.
  • The water temperature of this mineral-rich mountain lake remains almost consistently at 8°C.
  • The Blausee Nature Park covers 20 hectares, featuring not only the beautiful lake but also hiking trails through the forest and nature.
  • During summer, you can visit llamas and alpacas at the forest clearing Sommerau.
  • You can enjoy Blausee trout directly at the restaurant, from the shop, or through postal delivery.
  • Blausee is easily accessible by car, and you can also take a bus from Kandergrund or Frutigen.
  • There's a playground right next to the waterhouse, along with picnic areas and fire pits with firewood provided.

For a family outing, Blausee is a popular summer destination. The water temperature here is consistently around 8°C, but swimming in the lake is not allowed. Next to the waterhouse, you'll find free-to-use grilling spots. Firewood is available, and you can get some in the restaurant nearby in the evenings.

What you can do at Blausee

The Blausee nature park is open year-round. You need to pay an entrance fee to visit.

Boat trips across the blue lake

The entrance fee already includes a ride on the glass-bottom rowing boat. With it you glide gently over the crystal clear water and wonderfully recognize the bottom. Tree trunks and rocks give the impression of being just below the water surface. In reality, they are up to 12 meters below. The turquoise blue lake gets its exceptionally beautiful color from the clarity of the water. Therefore, only the blue part of the light is absorbed and the water looks wonderfully blue. However, the boats only operate in the summer half of the year.

Fishing or bathing is not allowed in the blue lake because of trout breeding. There is one exception: An annual ice swim is held in early December to benefit charitable causes. You can also eat or buy trout here to prepare it yourself later.

Certified divers are allowed to dive in the Blue Lake in winter between November and March.

In summer, Blausee is a bustling place, especially during school vacations. Especially for families the nature park is a popular destination.

Nature playground and barbecue areas at Lake Blausee

Swings, slides and climbing frames have been set up along the forest paths next to the water house. Here the children can let off steam. Right next door is the Bistro Wasserhaus, whose toilets can be used.

Some barbecue places next to the nature park are available for visitors. Wood is available at all barbecue sites. In the evening you can also get supplies at the Wasserhaus. In the evening the lake is illuminated and the atmosphere all around is unique.

Llamas and alpacas at the Blue Lake

In summer, the llamas and alpacas from Aeschi come here to the Sommerau. They then live in this beautiful clearing and can be visited. Especially for children this is a great experience!

Mystic and legend of the Blausee

In the evening the Blausee is illuminated and then has a special, mystical atmosphere. Then also the legend about a young couple in love comes to life again. They spent several nights in a barge on the lake. One day the boy fell from the rock to his death. Later the girl and the barge were found at the bottom of the lake. Since then, the lake is said to have its impressive blue color.

Since 1998, there has been a statue of a woman by artist Raphael Fuchs at the bottom of the lake. It is supposed to draw visitors' attention to the maudlin legend.
