Blatten in Lötschental is the highest village in this valley in the Upper Valais. It is situated at 1542 m above sea level and consists of characteristic Valais wooden houses with slate roofs. As the place is part of the Jungfrau Aletsch Bietschhorn mountain region, it belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage site. At the end of the Lötschental lies the Lang Glacier, from which the Lonza River springs. Between Blatten and the Ferdener Reservoir, the river turns into a rapid and challenging white-water stream. In winter, the Lötschental is a popular area for cross-country skiing.
