Kleine Scheidegg is not only the gateway to the Jungfraujoch. From here you can reach the large ski area Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen - Grindelwald/Wengen. Also the Lauberhorn is nearby and easy to reach on foot. If you want to walk the Eiger Trail, you can also get there via Kleine Scheidegg.
The two rack railroads also meet at Kleine Scheidegg:
Cogwheel railway | Tal station | Height (m above sea level) | Mountain station | Height (m above sea level) | Route (km) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Wengernalpbahn | Lauterbrunnen | 797 | Kleine Scheidegg | 2061 | 10.47 |
Wengernalpbahn | Wengen | 1275 | Kleine Scheidegg | 2061 | 6.65 |
Wengernalpbahn | Grindelwald | 1003 | Kleine Scheidegg | 2061 | 8.64 |
Jungfraubahn | Kleine Scheidegg | 2061 | Top of Europe Jungfraujoch | 3454 | 9.34 |
Wengernalpbahn The Wengernalpbahn comes from Lauterbrunnen via Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg. From here it continues to Grindelwald (and vice versa). The narrow-gauge rack railroad was opened as early as 1893. It is still the longest continuous rack railroad in the world. It runs on a total distance of 19.2 km.
Jungfrau Railway The Jungfrau Railway begins its journey at Kleine Scheidegg. The route to the Jungfraujoch is a total of 9.3 km long and leads through four tunnels. The Jungfrau Railway climbs almost 1400 meters in altitude on its way. For your first visit to the Jungfraujoch we have put together some tips.
Since the implementation of the V-Project, the Wengernalpbahn has lost importance as a feeder from Grindelwald to the Jungfraujoch. The Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal halves the journey time to the Top of Europe. In this case, you change to the Jungfrau Railway at the Eigergletscher station and do not travel via Kleine Scheidegg.
In summer you can find both pleasant and more difficult hiking trails at the Kleine Scheidegg. Some of them are also good to walk in winter.
If you are in the Jungfrau Region for a longer period of time and want to get to know different parts of the region, the Jungfrau Travel Pass might be worthwhile for you. You can combine train, boat, mountain railroad and bus trips as you like.
On this mountain hike you walk directly along the foot of the Eiger north face. It is also possible for non-experienced hikers. The path is designed for a comfortable hike. On the way you can enjoy the view of the Lauberhorn, the Kleine Scheidegg and the Grindelwald valley.
From Kleine Scheidegg you walk up to the Eiger glacier. In the opposite direction, the trail is even easier to walk. It is pleasantly wide and always has something different to offer along the way. The stations take you back in time and tell you about earlier events.
During the World Cup, the Lauberhorn race is an absolute highlight. 2.the world-class athletes need 5 min for the 4.5 km long Lauberhorn downhill run. They overcome more than 1000 meters of altitude. The backdrop with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is also spectacular.
In summer you have the opportunity to watch this dangerous ski descent and hike down in peace. The trail takes you over these stages: Lauberhornschulter, Hundschopf, Wickibort, Bort and Allmend. Some parts of the descent are very steep. On the way, 12 boards inform you about the facts of the route.
On this hike, you'll be going downhill a lot. We therefore recommend that you use hiking poles to protect your knees. The hiking trail is otherwise very easy to walk.
The winter sports area stretches over altitudes from 944 to 2400 meters above sea level and is considered the largest ski area in the Bernese Oberland. While you ski, you can enjoy the view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
You can get to the skiing area with the rack railroads Wengernalpbahn and Jungfraubahn. The cable cars of the V-Project take you from Grindelwald Terminal to the Eiger Glacier or to Männlichen.
In addition, there are 9 modern quad and six-seater chairlifts and 8 ski lifts in the ski area, which take you comfortably to all slopes. On Kleine Scheidegg, in Wengen and on Männlichen there are practice lifts for children and adult beginners. You will also find numerous ski schools in Grindelwald, some of which go to Kleine Scheidegg.
The slopes on Kleine Scheidegg are open between the end of November and mid-April, provided there is sufficient snowfall.
Around the Kleine Scheidegg you will find very nice and maintained toboggan runs.
Among the most famous sledding runs at Kleine Scheidegg are:
One of the most important events every year in January is the Lauberhorn Race. In September, until 2020, it was also the destination of the Jungfrau Marathon. This mountain marathon involved 1953 meters of ascent. Since 2021, the marathon ends at the Eiger glacier.
The Kleine Scheidegg is a tourist magnet. Therefore, there is also a large, traditional hotel here. As early as 1840, it began catering to guests at Kleine Scheidegg as the "Zur Gemse" inn. Columns of mules pulled up the 1000 meters in altitude, bringing guests and goods.
At 2061 meters above sea level stands the Kleine Scheidegg mountain restaurant, which has a large sun terrace. The associated lodge offers dormitories, but also single and double rooms. In the outdoor bar you can find goulash soup, bratwurst or delicious sandwiches. There are 210 seats in total.
The Eigernordwand restaurant is located at 2070 meters above sea level on Kleine Scheidegg. The restaurant also includes a self-service restaurant. In addition to Swiss cuisine, Asian specialties are also offered. The restaurant has 150 seats.
The Berghaus Grindelwaldblick stands at 2116 meters above sea level and has a restaurant, dormitories and single as well as double rooms. You can get Swiss dishes like Älplermagronen or cheese fondue here. There are 50 seats in the restaurant.
The traditional Hotel Bellevue des Alpes stands at 2070 meters above sea level and offers 100 beds. The attached day restaurant has 120 seats including a terrace.
