Facts About the Eiger Glacier

The Eiger Glacier starts at an elevation of 3,700 m a.s.l. on the western slope of the Eiger. It flows alongside the Little Eiger down to about 2,300 m a.s.l. at the Eiger Glacier station. It is approximately 2.5 km long, and its total area is about 1.5 km². The Eiger Glacier is also melting, losing about 10 to 20 meters of its length each year.

The smaller hanging glacier of the Eiger extends from 3,500 to 3,200 m a.s.l. between the Eiger and the Little Eiger. It nourishes the Eiger Glacier with ice and avalanches.

The Eiger Glacier is especially beautiful to see while hiking from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. In the afternoon sun, you can capture particularly striking pictures.

Getting to the Eiger Glacier by Cable Cars

To get to the Eiger Glacier, there are a cable car and a cogwheel train. The Eiger Express takes you in a gondola in just 15 minutes from the terminal in Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier.

The Jungfrau Railway is an electric cogwheel train that operates between Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch. It stops at the Eiger Glacier station, allowing transfers to and from the Eiger Express.

The cable cars operate throughout the year. Every year, the Eiger Express undergoes maintenance in the second week of November.

The 3S ropeway system is a very modern and climate-friendly rail system. As a tricable gondola lift, it virtually combines an aerial tramway with a gondola lift. In this way, large spans are overcome in a wind-stable manner without requiring a larger number of supports.

The Eiger Express has only seven supports over a length of 6483 meters. This also preserves the landscape as far as possible. Forest aisles are no longer required.
